The Refreshing Breeze – A Record of “Reform Literature” in China

The reform and opening upwas initiated in China in December 1978. Quite a number of writers began to reflect on the economic reform and write about what happened in contemporary society. Two classics from this literary movement of “Reform Literature”are featured. By delving into these two novels, we also learn about the historical transitions in China behind the stories.

Author Jia Pingwa was born in the countryside. Caring for his homeland, he records with his novels the changes taking place at the time. His award-winning work, “Turbulence”, follows the life of Jin Gou and Xiao Shui who are rural youths to recount the hiccups at the beginning of the reform, as well as the period of turbulence and the emptiness underneath of the whole society.

“The Ordinary World” is a masterpiece written by Lu Yao.It is praised as the crown jewel of Mao Dun Literature Prize winners. The book brings vivid portrait of people from all walks of life by telling the stories of Sun Shao’an and his sibling, Sun Shaoping, their family and people around them. It chronicles the rapidly changing decade in both urban and rural areas.
